Valentin is gone, but the nicely renovated corner house along the Moerkerkse Steenweg has a new inhabitant: Bistro Rombaux. The place opened on the first of November. They didn’t change the interior: the tables and the chairs stayed the same. But the new owners added some enthusiasm and passion. We went for a lunch, and left the place in a happy mood. The menu is limited, four starters, four main courses and four desserts. The chef is all by himself in the kitchen, so it needs to be feasible. The lunch changes a couple of times per week, and you can check it on their Facebook.
While drinking a Gin&Tonic, we decided to go for the lunch (€22). In the meantime, we got some humus, accompanied by two slices of rye bread with herring fillet and sour cream.
This afternoon we had the opportunity to taste a carpaccio of venison with celeriac and walnut, and that was exactly what was on our plates. Nothing more, nothing less. The pure essence of the flavours was beautifully emphasized. Many are attracted to all kinds of flowers and extra garnishes, this is not the case here. Very tasty and a great start.
The main course was pout with a mushroom risotto. A pretty plate and a nice portion. The fish was beautifully juicy, the risotto very tasteful. This course had, just like the starter, no unnecessary garnishes.
We ended our lunch with a coffee and a tea, and got a little cake, a marzipan ball and a praline. We payed €93,50. The price for the lunch is a real stroke of luck, the two beautiful plates were great value for money. It is also possible to opt for a main course and a dessert for the same price.
The staff is extremely friendly and professional. It did not bother us and we had some time, but in the end we had dined two hours. For those with little time during lunch, this may perhaps be too long. The place was, on this Tuesday afternoon, extremely crowded.
Bistro Rombaux scored from the first moment, we’ll definitely come again!
