It’s not always easy to find a snack on a Sunday afternoon. For most of us, this is the perfect day for a copious lunch. We went through our list and ended up at De Twijfelaar, in the Eekhoutstraat. It was taken over more than a year ago by a young couple. We noticed the warm welcome of the lady of the house immediately. We got a table close to the room in the part of the restaurant that used to be a button shop a long time ago.
There are not so many dishes on the menu, but there’s enough choice and there are always suggestions. With our aperitif, two gin-tonics, we got three appetizers, among which a tasty vegetable soup and a tiger shrimp with sweet and sour sauce, nicely presented in little bowls.
Annemieke chose the Eastern wok with chicken, I went for the burger with French fries. The portions were generous, the hamburger came with a salad and French fries, served separately, together with some mayonnaise. The wrap in the bowl wasn’t a must, I would have preferred some vegetables. The numerous, tender bits of chicken and the large crisps of prawn crackers made sure that we weren’t hungry.
My hamburger was one for the trained carnivore, tasty but it was a pity that they used industrial cheddar.
We ended with a coffee and payed the bill (€70). If you want to keep it a bit more economical, you can go for a lunch during the week and on Saturday: two dishes for €15.
De Twijfelaar is a nice bistro with a correct and very friendly staff. The dishes are cooked with good and fresh products, definitely the way to convince the people of Bruges. In the summer there’s a sunny terrace in the back. The art works in the restaurants are a great conversation starter when there are some silences… A great place to return one day!
